A Little Bit About Marietta

Though the origin of the name is unknown, the general consensus is that the city was named after Mary Cobb, the wife of U.S. Senator and superior court judge, Thomas Willis Cobb.

At the beginning of the Western and Atlantic Railroad, Marietta was the center of all activity, which resulted in a boom of economic prosperity. Although the hub was later moved to the now Atlanta area in 1842, Marietta still enjoyed prosperity and had a share in economic success with the surrounding areas.

The ever-vibrant and colorful Marietta Square is a slice of American history everyone should taste when they come to town. The square consists of fountains, gazebos, and delicious little local restaurants and bars. Spend a day meandering through the square on a warm summer day or bring your whole family at night to enjoy the lights and decorations on display for Christmas in the winter. No matter what time of year you go, Marietta Square is sure to be a beautiful site to see.

Also, in the square, you will find another piece of Americana. Grab some friends or family and enjoy a fantastic live performance in the historic Earl Smith Strand Theatre. It has recently been renovated and improved, but continues to maintain affordable prices, great service and impeccable shows.
